Bomb Threat

Contact: Tony CipollaPhone: (805) 781-4547Date and time of incident: 7-1-16, Approximately 4:45 PMPlace of Occurrence: 200 block of Front Street, Avila BeachVictim Information: N/ASuspect Information: N/AOn 7-1-16, the Sheriff's Office received a call from the Pismo Beach Police Department about a bomb threat in Avila Beach. The police department reported a man had called them saying he had planted two bombs at an Avila Beach hotel and another bomb on the beach itself. The bombs were reportedly set to go off at approximately 5:20 PM.
Sheriff's Deputies and Detectives responded to the location and began evacuating the Inn at Avila Beach and the beach itself. Traffic to the area was restricted. After the evacuations were complete, investigators began the process of clearing the hotel, the beach and neighboring businesses by methodically and extensively searching those locations looking for any suspicious devices or packages.
The Bomb Task Force was called out to investigate the only suspicious device that was found, a cooler that had been left behind on the beach during the evacuations.
The guests who had been evacuated from the hotel were allowed to return to their rooms at approximately 6:30 PM. The surrounding area was cleared at approximately 8:30 PM.
The District Attorney's Office, Cal Fire, CHP, CA Department of Fish & Wildlife, Port San Luis Harbor District and Lifeguards assisted the Sheriff's Office with this incident.
The investigation into this threat is continuing. No further information is available at this time.
