Chief Deputy Martin J. Basti, 59 a 32 year veteran of the sheriff's office and current custody/court services chief, will be sworn in on Monday at the Board of Supervisors, following the sheriff-elect's ceremony on January 3rd.
"Chief Deputy Basti has served in virtually every area of the department, starting as a dispatcher, reserve deputy, deputy sheriff, detective, narcotics, sergeant, commander and chief deputy. Chief Basti has a long record of public service and community service as well, I could not think of a better person to assist me in leading the department as we transition." said Sheriff-elect Ian Parkinson. Basti will serve in the position for one year and maintain command of the custody/court services division; his current chief deputy position will remain vacant as a cost savings measure.
Basti has served in several civic organizations, including Boys and Girls Club, Director of Special Olympics, Kiwanis clubs of Los Osos and Oceano, District Chair of the Boys Scouts of America and was named the 2003 Citizen of the Year for Los Osos.
Married 29 years, he and his wife Diane live in Templeton and have two grown sons.
