Contact: Rob BrynPhone: (805) 781-4547Date and time of incident: 8-3-10 1:30 PMPlace of Occurrence: North County - Unincorporated Atascadero Victim Information: WithheldSuspect Information: Thick accent, possibly middle eastern maleA north county woman responded to an unsolicited phone message at her home on Tuesday afternoon. The call claimed that her credit card balance could be reduced to 6.5% by calling a number in the "407" area code. The area code is a legitimate number for Orlando Florida, however the woman believes she was transferred to another number after the call was made.
The person who answered had a thick, possibly middle eastern male accent and would not verify the company he worked for or his name when the woman attempted to identify who she was speaking with. The man hung up.
People are cautioned to avoid these types of calls which may use an area code within the continental United States but actually be transferred off shore. In addition, most of these types of calls are phishing scams to obtain credit card numbers and other identification information to commit fraud.
In this case, no information was given and no loss occurred.
