Contact: Rob BrynPhone: (805) 781-4547Date and time of incident: 9-5-10 1:23 PMPlace of Occurrence: Lake Nacimiento, Las Tables areaVictim Information: 12 personsSuspect Information: n/aSan Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Marine Unit assisted in transporting 12 persons back to the Nacimiento Lake main dock after their ski boat sank in the Las Tables area.
It appears the vessel was overloaded and when traversing the 5 mph area near the crowded Las Tables area was struck by the wave current and flooded causing the vessel to go down nose first in approximately 7 feet of water. The persons on the vessel made it to shore safely, including the operator, who told authorities he could not swim but had a personal flotation device.
Sheriff's marine unit deputies urge boaters to know the load limitations on their vessels and to not include more persons then can be safely accommodated by the boat. Personal flotation devices must be of an approved type and available to all persons on the vessel. Overloading vessels swamped by wave action is the primary cause of boat sinking’s at the Nacimiento Lake area.
The sinking will be investigated by Monterey County Park Rangers.
