Summer Camp for GREAT Program

School Resource Officers with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's office will be hosting a weeklong summer camp for kids August 13 through 17 at Shandon Elementary School in Shandon. The GREAT (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program is in response to the growing concern about young people getting involved in gangs. Its focus is to develop positive activities to keep kids out of gangs. As part of the camp, on Thursday, August 16, Sheriff Ian Parkinson will be flown in by CHP Helicopter to meet and talk with the kids. Also, the Sheriff's Office will be conducting demonstrations of the Dive Team, Search and Rescue, and K9 units. The media is invited to attend this event or make arrangements to visit the summer program during the week. Kids involved in the camp will be available for interviews.
