Arrest in the Salgado Homicide Investigation

Contact: Commander Aaron NixPhone: (805) 781-1423Date and time of incident: 05/17/12, 1600 hoursPlace of Occurrence: Northbound Hwy 101, one mile south of Tefft St.Victim Information: Gabriel Salgado, 17 yoaSuspect Information: Yepez, Armando, 21 yoa, 5-08, 145 lbs., brown eyes, black hairOn 05/17/12 at 1600 hours the San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Office made an arrest of Armando Yepez, 21, of Santa Maria for his involvement in the 11/17/11 homicide of Gabriel Salgado in Oceano. Salgado was killed as a result of a drive-by shooting in the 1700 block of 21st Street in Oceano. A 14 year old juvenile male was also shot in the leg during the assault, but ultimately recovered from his wounds.

Sheriff's Detectives, assisted by several local agencies, began an exhaustive investigation to bring those responsible to justice in this case. 3,019 man hours have been expended to date on this investigation, and many more hours of additional work will follow prior to resolution of this case. Sheriff's Detectives used all investigative means at their disposal, and were assisted by many other allied agencies, including the Sheriff's Gang Task Force, Sheriff's Special Operations Unit, Sheriff's Patrol, San Luis Obispo District Attorney's Office, County Probation, State Parole, Federal Bureau of Investigation, ICE, California Highway Patrol, Santa Maria Police Department, and the DOJ lab in Goleta.

Armando Yepez was arrested after the service of several search warrants in the South County yesterday afternoon. He was booked into county jail with a $1 million bond for the following charges:
PC 187, homicide
PC 186.22 (b)(1), commission of a crime for the benefit of a criminal street gang
PC 186.22 (a), participation in a criminal street gang

The Sheriff's Office expects a filing soon and Yepez will be charged with additional offenses at that time. The investigation into this case in active and ongoing, and a result the information available regarding the case is very limited at this time.
