GREAT & Sheriff’s Youth Summer Camp

GREAT & Sheriff's Youth Summer Camp

Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) is a national gang and violence prevention program built around school-base, law enforcement officer instructed classroom curricula.  GREAT is designed to prevent delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership for children.  The program is focused on preventing bullying, respecting others, making good life choices, conflict resolution, and anger recognition and management. GREAT is provided by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office to local schools with six once-a-week classes for students in the 4th and 5th grade, and thirteen once-a-week classes for students in sixth grade through eighth grade.

A large part of the program is the weeklong Sheriff’s Youth Summer Camps that take place during summer break.  The camps have a different theme for each day (Respect, Empathy, Health, Teamwork, and Conflict Resolution).  All classroom and fun activities are based on the theme of the day.  School Resource Deputies, who work and teach GREAT in the local schools, teach and run the activities at the camps.  At the end of every day, an assembly entertains the students.  The camps are for incoming 5th grade through 7th grade students for the upcoming school year.
