Rural Crime Task Force deputies assisted by investigators from the Humane Society of the US (HSUS), Santa Barbara Sheriff's Dept., County of SLO Code Enforcement staff, along with sheriff's detectives raided a suspected fighting birds operation in Nipomo on Tuesday morning.
Arrested were Paul A. Castellanos and Andy Ybarra Castellanos of Nipomo and Juan Leva-Corral of Santa Maria.
Rural Crime Task Force deputies and HSUS personnel remain on scene processing approximately 600 fighting cocks stored at a rural Nipomo property.
Both Castellanos men are being booked into San Luis Obispo county jail on charges of possession of birds with intent to fight and cock fighting implements. Leva-Corral was booked on possession of fighting birds.
Some of the roosters will be quarantined on site, while others will be turned over to Animal Services for evidence purposes.
