Suspicious Circumstances

Contact: Tony CipollaPhone: (805) 781-4547Date and time of incident: 8-26-17, Approximately 5:30 PMPlace of Occurrence: Near the entrance to Montana De Oro State Park, Los OsosVictim Information: N/ASuspect Information: N/AOn 8-26-17, the Sheriff's Coast Station took a citizen report from a hiker who had found an abandoned kayak on the beach near the entrance to Montana De Oro State Park.
The Sheriff's Office along with State Park Rangers responded to the location of the kayak. Sheriff's Deputies along with the assistance of a CHP helicopter, U.S. Coast Guard, State Park Rangers and Cal Fire conducted a precautionary search on land, air and water. No missing person or overdue subjects associated with this incident had been reported at that time.
Sheriff's Deputies were able to determine the owner of the kayak was from Lompoc. At approximately 8:00 PM, Lompoc Police made contact with the owner who told them he had been fishing in his kayak this morning when it capsized. A friend in another kayak retrieved him from the water and took him back to shore. Thinking the kayak had sunk into the water, the owner returned to his home in Lompoc. Later, the hiker discovered the abandoned kayak had washed ashore in Los Osos.
