Based on the description provided by a witness, the Deputies spotted the suspect's vehicle and initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Highway 1 and Halcyon Road.
Deputies observed multiple items of opened and unopened mail in the vehicle. A search of the car revealed stolen mail belonging to 117 separate victims. Also discovered were two bags which contained a total of approximately 1.4 grams of methamphetamine.
The driver of the vehicle 32-year-old Angelique Ramirez and the passenger, 35-year-old Jose Ramirez, Jr., were arrested on multiple charges. Two children in the car, ages 5 and 2, were turned over to Child Welfare Services.
During the investigation, Sheriff's Detectives and members of the Sheriff's Narcotics Unit served a search warrant at a motel room in Santa Maria where the suspects had been staying. More stolen mail was recovered including bank statements, credit cards, and tax statements along with instruments and materials used in the process of forging checks. Investigators also discovered approximately 7.6 grams of methamphetamine which was easily accessible by the children.
The Sheriff's Office is in contact with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to identify the victims and are in the process of returning the mail back to the individual owners.
