On the night of 9-4-15, the suspect attacked the victim with a hatchet. The victim received multiple traumatic injuries. She was able to escape to a nearby house where a neighbor called 911. Deputies arrived and the woman was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where she is still being treated for the injuries she sustained in the attack.
During the incident, shots were heard coming from the area of the house where the assault took place. Deputies discovered Turpin in the backyard of the home, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Based on the nature of the injuries suffered by the victim and the circumstances of the attack, investigators are changing the filing status of the charges from assault with a deadly weapon to attempted murder.
The investigation is continuing. There is no further information to be released at this time.

Detectives are releasing the name of the suspect involved in that incident as 25-year-old Kelly Neal Turpin of Los Osos. Turpin was a roommate of the 58-year-old victim.
