Public Safety Video Surveillance System

Contact: Tony CipollaPhone: (805) 781-4547Date and time of incident: 5-23-16Place of Occurrence: San Miguel & ShandonVictim Information: N/ASuspect Information: N/AThe Sheriff's Office has recently installed a public safety video surveillance system in parts of San Miguel and Shandon. The cameras serve several functions. They increase the Sheriff's Office presence in those areas. They will help in identifying suspects and suspect vehicles involved in crimes in those towns. And since the cameras are located in public areas and are identified with public signs, they also serve as a deterrent to crime.
The four cameras in San Miguel and the four cameras in Shandon were paid for through a state Justice Assistance grant in the amount of $17,862. The cameras will be recording 24/7 and will be able to be viewed on cellphones by Sheriff's Investigators and the Watch Commander.
A policy regarding the use of the camera system has been developed to balance public safety concerns along with protecting our core constitutional rights and values.
It is the intention of the Sheriff's Office to continue to add cameras throughout the County in those areas which would benefit from an increased public safety presence.
