A 13 year veteran San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department Correctional Officer was injured by a violent prisoner on Saturday during the booking process. The correctional officer was processing the suspect when an altercation began which lead to the officer being injured and immediately transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
The correctional officer sustained a broken ankle in three places and is scheduled for surgery on Sunday. The suspect remains in custody on $20,000 bail for felony battery on a custodial officer, PC 243 (C)(1).
This is the second time in two months that Sheriff’s Department personnel have been hospitalized with serious injuries as a result of attacks. Deputy Nate Paul was severely injured on May 28th when struck by a suspect in a pick-up truck following an altercation at Lake Nacimiento. After undergoing surgery Paul is still recuperating from his injuries.
The suspect in the correctional officer attack will be charged with felony assault and is expected to be arraigned July 6th.
